The 31st Year Oyster Festival - Oyster Bay L.I, NY

COME AND ENJOY THE 31st  YEAR OYSTER FESTIVAL!!!


If you still have no idea about what to do this weekend, you can enjoy the Oyster Festival, the East Coast's largest waterfront festival has returns this October for it's 31st year!!! Offering a fun mixture of new activities and old favorites that are certain to entertain the entire family.

The Oyster Festival originated as a hometown parade honoring Theodore Roosevelt before evolving into the largest outdoor festival on Long Island, under the auspices of the Oyster Bay Rotary.


You can't miss this, every year the festival has many visitor from everywhere in Long Island and event visitor from out of the State of New York and event from out of the country.

 The Festival will be having plenty of activities to enjoy, live entertainment, music with live bands tall ships, top-notch artisans, pirates shows, midway rides, and the iconic oyster eating and sucking contest. Besides a great food court where volunteers chefs and culinary pros work side by side, cooking and serving dozens of unique Oyster, clams and many other seafood concoctions along with traditional festival fare.

The 31st Annual Oyster Eating Contest requires an iron stomach and world-class appetite!!! Sucking is a true skill competition, make sure you are ready to participate!!!!


The free Oyster Festival will run with rain or shine this Saturday October 18th and Sunday 19th, starting at 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Fall Family festival will be taking place at McDonald and South Ponds at Hempstead Lake State Park. Starting 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Come out and enjoy a day of fishing with your family, give your children a fun day! Headlining the event is a "Childrens casting Pumpkin".

FALL FAMILY FISHING FESTIVAL 2014


The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great sport of freshwater fishing, the festival combines the opportunity to fish with variety of children's activities to provide a rewarding family experience.

No fishing license is required for this event and in addition this year there will be no admission fee and parking is free!!! Festival activities begin at 10:00 and offers fly fishing instructions, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services. 

Additionally a display area will be set up by trout unlimited, DEC environmental education, State Park as well as other fishing and environmental organization.

Children's activities will also begin at 10:00 and will include pumpkin decorating, magic show, pony rides and face painting. A casting contest where participants can catch a pumpkin or hook a prize will be held by the knights of Columbus of Seaford. Casting contest prizes are provided by I FISH NY, State Parks.

OCTOBER 13th COLUMBUS DAY PARADE ON 5th AVE NEW YORK

COLUMBUS DAY PARADE!!!

In New York October 13th on 5th ave  in Manhattan you can enjoy a family and friendly celebration filled with colorful floats and rousing musical performances. The parade honors Italian American contributions to New York City and draws around million spectators and 35,000 marchers. The parade travels from 47th Street to 72nd Street and marching bands will perform along length, and there is also a red carpet area between 68th and 69th Streets for stage acts ( If you want to get closer, special passes are needed).

The Columbus Day Parade is a fun filled parade that gets bigger and better every year. Participants from all over the world march in our parade. The Columbus Day Parade has become a globally televised event with millions of viewers and over a half million spectators on the streets and if  you haven't join this celebration before you can do it this  Monday October 13th.

The parade celebrates the spirit of exploration and courage that inspired Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition. Over a dozen high school bands, as well as virtuous professionals groups from the United States and Italy, march up on Fifth Ave and filled the canyons of midtown with joyous, heart-pounding music. Traditional folks groups performed centuries-old dances, and cutting edges designs were brought to the parade route in display of the vibrant culture that is Italy today.


Columbus Day First became an official state holiday in 1789, and became a federal holiday in the United State in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus's voyage since the colonial period. In 1972 New York City and other U.S cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event. 

During the four hundredth anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism and this patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress.

Since 1970, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October, coincidentally the same day as Thanksgiving in the neighboring Canada.

In the month of November we have apples head to the Pumpkin Fest in many place of Long Island and even if the weather forces the family to look for activities indoors, you will still have many options to choose from. Giant Pumpkin Weigh- Off will be held on Sunday, October 5th and it will start at 11 AM. Everyone who has a grown pumpkin, no matter what size, is encouraged to bring it and show off their growing skills. 


In addition to awards for the three heaviest pumpkins, they will also be giving prizes to "the Rookie of the year"  and "Best pumpkin grown by a child under 15 years"
